It Ε PORT xliii honourable appointment of Professor of Physiology in the University of Sydney and in succession to part of his duties the Council have been glad to appoint Mr Peyton Beale son of one of the most distinguished and honoured members of the Medical Staff -The Evening Class Department exhibits slight decrease but has recently shown tendency to greater prosperity It has been affected by the great development in recent years of local lectures but the University Extension Society has lately recognized the advantage of using the Laboratories of the College for the instruction of its mor advanced students and the Dean of the Department Pro- fessor Gault has introduced several facilities for matriculated members of the Department which he believes will be more and more appreciated Special classes have been arranged for some of the more important examinations and when the College is part of thoroughly organized University system its Evening Classes will afford advantages which no system of local lectures can supply The Gilbart Banking Lectures have been more appreciated than ever having been attended during the winter by the large number of 900 students -The Ladies' Department fully maintains its prosperity under the judicious and energetic guidance of Miss Schmitz In recognition of her services and with the object of adding to her authority and influence the Council have during the past year assigned to her the title and office of Vice-Principal of the Ladies' Department in addition to the office of Secre- tary of that Department At her suggestion Lectures and Classes are from time to time established in the various subjects of interest in modern education and ladies are thus enabled with perfect freedom of choice to pursue any branch of learning or art or science in which they are interested -The Civil Service Classes show considerable in- crease in numbers The Second Division Class which had increased by 80 Studonts last year has increased by this
