lii report stituted Committee of which he is good enough to be the President by which furtlier appeal to the public will shortly be put forth The general financial position of the College is more encouraging than it has been for some years past though there is still deficiency in the annual accounts and the appeal is not made solely for purposes of current maintenance But the development of modern scientific education is so expensive that College without pecuniary endowment must necessarily rely on the occasional support of the public for the purpose of such development deputation from most of the University Colleges of England and Wales lately waited on Mr Goschen requesting an increase in the annual public grant which was made to them two years ago and from the manner in which the deputation was received there seems every reason to hope that some such further grant will be made to them The amount of the existing grant how- ever as well as of any addition to it depends in part on the extent of the voluntary contributions made to the College and it is therefore doubly necessary and advantageous that such contributions should be liberally maintained and in- creased On the whole alike in respect to the number of students to the general recognition of the work and position of the College and to its pecuniary prospects the Council have reason for thankfulness to Almighty God and they trust that under His blessing the College has entered upon period of much increased prosperity and usefulness
