Lister's colleagues

Many images survive in the King's College London Archives of staff who worked with Joseph Lister while he was professor and surgeon at King's College Hospital, Portugal Street from 1877-1893.

Medical education at University of Edinburgh, House Surgeon to Joseph Lister at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, Lister brought him with him when he moved to King’s College London in 1877 where Cheyne was his first House Surgeon. Cheyne was Lister’s pupil, assistant and exponent of Listerian methods and they were said to make a fine team. He joined the navy during the South African war and eventually rose to the position of Surgeon Rear Admiral. Medical education at the University of Edinburgh where he worked under Joseph Lister. Lister brought him to King’s College London when he moved in 1877, where Stewart was Senior Assistant or Clerk. Later he was in practice in Halifax, Nova Scotia where he used and taught Listerian methods.
