Facsimiles and other publications

Image of titlepage for The True Tragedy of Richard Duke of YorkTitle page for fascimile of True Tragedy of Richard Duke of YorkOne practical achievement for the New Shakspere Society made possible by scientific discovery, was the publishing of photographic facsimiles of important early printed quartos of Shakespearean plays.

No authorial manuscript of a Shakespeare play published in his period survives, so early quartos are essential to the study of his works.

The Society also produced printed editions of the plays and contemporary illustrations showing costumes and customs, to give a fuller understanding of the Tudor and Jacobean world.

The Shakespeare Allusion Book - a reference work including all known instances of early writers mentioning or alluding to Shakespeare - initially began as lists compiled for the New Shakspere Society.
