Sports medicine

Drug Control CentreDrug Control CentreUnderstanding how the body works (physiology) is key to sports science.

Sports physiology is taught by a number of universities in the United Kingdom and worldwide and is supported by several professional organisations such as the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) and the British Association of Sport and Exercise Medicine (BASEM).

The latter runs a wide range of courses including rehabilitation medicine (recovery from illness and injury), emergency life support in sport, nutrition, the improvement of cardiovascular performance and the treatment of joint injuries.

King's role has been to undertake crucial basic research upon which many of the most recent advances in sports physiology, nutrition and testing are based.

Not least of these was in carrying out among the earliest studies of the microscopic structure of muscle by researchers led by Professor Jean Hanson during the 1950s and 1960s.
