The United Hospitals Challenge Cup

St Thomas's Rugby, 1876St Thomas's Rugby, 1876All three teams which now comprise the GKT Rugby Club quickly acquired formidable reputations as first rate teams, particularly during the United Hospitals Rugby Challenge Cup, established in 1874 and the world's oldest competition in the sport.

The King's side took longer to become established and only really acquired success in the 1920s, a period which also marked the pinnacle of Guy's achievements.

Early matches were played at Guy's, King's and St Thomas's grounds at Blackheath, Wormwood Scrubs and Clapham Common. Opponents included other colleges and hospitals and teams that are today among the most important in English rugby including the Wasps and Harlequins.
