Experiments in emancipation

In parallel with their campaign for the abolition of the Atlantic slave trade the abolitionists, in Europe and North America, concerned themselves with the plight of runaway or freed slaves, many of whom were destitute.

How could they be helped towards a secure future?

The mixed fortunes of two experimental settlements on the West African coast, Sierra Leone and Liberia, illustrate the results of these efforts.
