The first of three selections of photographs from the fourth volume belonging to Rear-Admiral Victor Gallafent Gurner mainly shows life on board ship and the effects of war between the Russians and Japanese, not least an engagement at Chemulpo Bay, Incheon, in February 1904.

Gurner served as First Lieutenant on board the cruiser Cressy, on the China station, which features in a number of these photographs. The ill-fated Cressy was to be torpedoed and sunk in September 1914.

Interestingly, the album includes views of refuelling, contact between the British and Japanese and other vessels including HMS Monmouth, which Gurner commanded, and the battleship, HMS Albion, flagship of the China station.

This selection provides a snapshot of life off duty, including a hockey match, beach picnic and views of Hong Kong, Amoy in China and Samoa.
